Heirloomed Weekly : Homemade

Heirloomed Weekly : Homemade

A weekly round up of some of my favorite things, happenings, trends + more, from heirloomed founder + lifestyle designer, Ashley Schoenith.

As we enter Mother’s Day weekend, I can’t help but think of my own Mothers + Grandmothers and reflect. Because of the nature of our business and my passion for heirlooms, I spend a lot of time talking to people about their Mothers + Grandmothers and the memories they associate with these special people in their lives.

Though the memories vary, there is a common thread of homemade food and cooking that runs through nearly every story. People remember the smells, the ingredients, and the memories from being in the kitchen with mom. So I thought it only fitting this week to give a tribute to all things homemade.

My most cherished possessions are a stack of handwritten and typewriter recipe cards, a collection assembled from my Grandmother + Nana. Family recipes, as you can pretty clearly see, have inspired our whole company.

If you haven’t tackled your own family’s favorite recipes, now is probably the best time you’ll ever find to do so. If you find that your baking doesn’t turn out like Grandma’s, I put together this post that shares a few reasons why that I think you may enjoy + find helpful in perfecting each one.

Also - we have a brand new recipe on the site this week for a classic Chocolate Chip Cookie, because who doesn’t love this staple. And, you probably have all the ingredients you need to whip up a batch, even if you’re using a beloved recipe from the “back of the bag.”

You’ve probably seen that meme going around that warns Dads that there are only a few days left until Mother’s Day and the kids aren’t making her a card at school so the homemade gift will be more important + special than ever this year.

I had the kids spend a little bit of extra time in “art” at homeschool this week and we drew cards for all our moms + grandmas. You can also get the kids in on some Breakfast in Bed service for Mom - with a few of my personal favorite recipes being Buttermilk Pancakes, French Toast or some Buttermilk Biscuits. See our full Breakfast recipe round up here.

If all this home cooking and baking has made you realize that you have a few holes in your kitchen or are in need of an equipment upgrade or two, you’ll love this round up of my favorite Kitchen Essentials. Most are long-lasting heritage brands and products that you can buy once and use for generations. And, my most used pan in the whole kitchen? This one, hands down.

And, I’m sharing an updated Kitchen Tour of our own home kitchen (where we’ve been spending a whole lot of time these days) which I updated with a ton of fixtures + finishes links - from paint colors to countertops and more, so thanks for all the questions on those details. Love to see y’all in your kitchens too #HEIRLOOMED.

Sometimes the tools you use are just as important as the ingredients you put into a recipe. My mom has this tin set of nested mixing bowls that I still believe make all the difference for whipping up ingredients. And my Grandmother’s tin measuring spoons are now a coveted staple in my own kitchen.

The single item we get the most heartfelt customer emails about are these old metal star punched colanders. Folks have the sweetest memories with them and love being able to snag one up for their own kitchen. Closely followed behind these few vintage baking items that just may spark a memory or two for you.

This week I thought it would be fun to take a peek at some great Mom-focused jewelry. I have a necklace with a gold ring on it with each of my children’s name and birthdates, along with one with my anniversary date. Love to know what Mom jewelry you may have.

This week we have a brand new gift set that is filled with homemade goodness - our Baking Box gift set. A linen tea towel from our Family Recipe Collection paired with a bundled set of our blank recipe cards makes the perfect gift set and is just $20 this week. Click to shop, and be sure to enter our giveaway this week to win a set of your own.

Congratulations to last week’s giveaway winner, Manda S from Edmond, Oklahoma!
