Heirloomed Weekly : Perfecting your Craft.

A weekly round up of some of my favorite things, happenings, trends + more, from heirloomed founder + lifestyle designer, Ashley Schoenith.

I asked the kids the other day what their favorite part of the quarantine has been so far and their answers made me smile from ear to ear – spending more time with our family, riding bikes and catching tadpoles in the creek. It’s basically 1983 again.

It got me thinking, after things start getting back to normal what will I wish we had done more of during these slower times. So, I immediately bought a book (like an actual, non-business, non-Kindle, hardcover book to read), and Wyatt and I started taking guitar lessons online (one of my favorite hobbies that I had long since left behind).

It’s the perfect time to turn that dream into a reality, to make time for a hobby, to live out your passion, to get started on your bucket list, to accomplish a goal, to perfect your craft.

FOOD

Well, the Kentucky Derby might not be running this weekend but there’s no reason we can’t still celebrate the traditions. Here’s a go-to recipe for a Classic Mint Julep and an easy “how-to” for making your own Mint Simple Syrup.  And perhaps you’ll go the extra mile with Mint Ice Cubes or Bourbon Pecan Pie.

And, if you’re feeling extra crafty, here are a few other simple + classic Cocktail Recipes from the site to try your hand at.

FAMILY

We’ve been focused on the arts + crafts as a family over here in our house – from painting rocks, to chalk art in the driveway, rainbow looms, to tie dyeing shirts, to planting a garden, to online guitar lessons and beyond.

And, I’m a big believer in continuing education and self education – it’s especially essential as an entrepreneur. I’ve been immersing myself in some Skillshare classes lately, perfecting some techniques + design skills on Illustrator and learning Photoshop. Our team has taken courses on editing video and Instagram storytelling, and I’ve got a few courses in my queue on sketchbook inspiration and watercolor. And, I’m almost ready to share a super big design project I’ve been working hard to launch – so stay tuned.

MasterClass is also one on my list and they’re having an amazing buy-one-get-one-free offer right now – I’m dying to take the Sara Blakely course on entrepreneurship, Ron Finley’s gardening course and the Thomas Keller cooking techniques. Hopping on it.

DIY

Now if you’re looking for a little DIY inspiration, the you’ll just adore seeing this fun DIY tutorial our wonderful intern Holly put together on Hand Embroidery. I spotted her posting about it over on Instagram and stitching up everything from aprons to tea towels to the cutest details on denim pieces from her closet and immediately asked if she’d share a little how-to inspiration with you all.

It even inspired this limited-edition batch of hand embroidered Mama aprons that we have over in our Mother’s Day Shop right now. I’ve been dying for us to offer a hand embroidery option for years and years so I couldn’t be more excited.

HOME

And speaking of taking this time to do things you love, one of my major passions in life is design. We built our home about 4 year ago and I absolutely adored every little detail of the fixtures, finishes and design process.

Well in our “spare time” we have begun renovating our basement – a project that has been a long time coming. As a family of three littles and someone that runs their business out of their home (at least for the time being), having this extra space will truly be such a blessing for us.

Sharing the “Before” and my whole mood board full of inspiration over on the site here.

VINTAGE

Because I’m hopeful you’ll be making one of our craft cocktails this weekend, this little vintage roundup is cocktail-inspired because TGIF.

I’ll be manning my cocktail station from our front keeping room, where we made this fun little bar area filled with vintage details + moody, masculine charm. Cheers!

STYLE

And don’t forget the Kentucky Derby wasn’t cancelled completely, just postponed until the Fall so now’s the perfect time to still snag a beautiful hat for the event. Hats are truly one of my very favorite accessories – here’s a few of my top picks.

GIVEAWAY

This week we’re giving away one of our special Recipe Card Bundle Gift Sets, which includes a bundle of our quality blank recipe cards, perfect for all those handwritten family recipes along with our Wooden Recipe Card Holder block that is custom made by our friends at WoodKith.
