With this gracious season of gifting, one of my all-time favorite things to give to friends are food gifts. I've shared a few over the years, but today I'm sharing one of my favorites simply because it's so beautiful.
I teamed up with the folks at Red Gold Tomatoes to make this homemade Pizza Sauce as the hero of the kit, and I love including a little recipe card in the gift so my friends can make it on their own too.
I love that Red Gold is a generational family-run operation and has been for over 75 years. And, their whole peeled tomatoes were just awarded "best canned tomato" by Epicurious.
For the Pizza Kit I included a bunch of fresh ingredients like herbs, garlic, mozzarella cheese + infused olive oil, as well as some pretty kitchen items like our linen tea towel + a big wooden spoon. I also included fresh pizza dough so they can literally make a pizza on-the-spot and enjoy it. This also makes a great gift for a family with a new baby.
HOMEMADE PIZZA SAUCE
- 1 (28-ounce) can Red Gold Whole Peeled Tomatoes
- 2 TBSP olive oil
- 1 1/2 tsp dried basil
- 1/2 tsp onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
- 3 cloves finely minced garlic
- 1 tsp granulated sugar
- 1 tsp kosher salt
Open can of Red Gold Whole Peeled Tomatoes and pour into a large bowl. Mash and break apart tomatoes, leaving them in chunky pieces and set aside. Combine olive oil, onion powder, oregano and basil in saucepan over medium heat. Cook for 3 minutes until combined. Add minced garlic cook for 1-2 minutes, stirring constantly. Next, add the tomatoes + liquid to the saucepan. Add sugar and salt, reducing heat to low, and simmer for approximately 30 minutes. Stir, then taste and season as necessary. Continue to simmer for an additional 15 minutes. Use the sauce for pizzas immediately or allow to come to room temperature before bottling. Enjoy!
I'd love to know what other food gifts you're making this holiday season!
