Classic Kids Easter Books Round Up.

You know I love anything classic and traditional and while I'm doing some last minute planning for the kids Easter basket this year, I'm getting all nostalgic about these classic Easter books for kids.

My kiddos love reading, especially at night so including a book or two in their basket is always a must. I thought I'd share this simple round up and hope you'll work in some classics this year too.

Old-School Game Night.

There are so many traditions I love creating, whether knowingly or not, for my kiddos during this very special time in their childhood.

I was just talking about how funny it is that some of the fondest memories I have from growing up were some of the most simple things of my life. Sipping hot cocoa on the front porch of a cabin, fishing with a cane pole and a can of corn in the middle of a creek, eating pecan sandies at the beach in a large hole we dug in the sand because it was so windy, and making "mud pies" with rocks + leaves we found in the driveway.

Because the simple things are often times the most special, and because of the ages of our kids these days (5, 3 + 2) the thought of game night every now and then is right up our "staying in tonight" alley.

Even our supper club has skewed toward game night lately in lieu of going out. I grew up playing Rummikub, SkipBo, Gin Rummy, Monopoly and Dominos, and doing puzzles on those rainy days at the beach. I love the throwback nature of a good game night and the kids love the challenge of learning something new and growing their little skills, beating each other (or us ..) and of course munching on a few snacks along the way.

I've included a few of my favorites below because they make great holiday gifts + stocking stuffers as the season grows closer. Love to know some of your favorite games to play with your family! #HEIRLOOMED

Hand Drawn Sketches.

This time of year I'm scrambling to squeeze in a little photo session of my family so I can knock out my Christmas cards as early as possible. Which pretty much never happens. I'm generally rushing at the last minute to put them together, get my address list updated and cards out before the season is over. Maybe this is my year.

One reason I wait until the last minute these days is because my kiddos are at such a fun, young age and before my very eyes I wake up and they seem suddenly older overnight. I say that to mean that I hate taking the family photos too soon before the season because I love to capture them and their age + wonder at that very moment in life.

As I started thinking about my card this year it made me reflect on how we are capturing them as children forever. One way to do this beyond photography is a bit more old school through sketches and paintings of your children.

I'm so thankful that my mom is an amazingly talented artist who can create just about anything I throw at her (which admittedly is *alot*). For each of the kids 1st birthdays she did these gorgeous pencil sketches of them, forever capturing that special first year for us there on paper. Such a special keepsake that I know they'll cherish later in life.

When you're taking your family photos for your own holiday card this year, you may want to consider having your photographer capture a few individual photos of your or your child to keep and later have turned into a piece of art.

While some artists prefer to work with live models to capture the spirit and personality of the person, many work from a photograph so you'll want to plan ahead and keep in mind the style of art you want at the end of the journey. For example, if you're looking for more of a traditional oil painting, you may want to go with a sweet seated pose in a little chair in your home in a sweet little smocked outfit. It's great to do this around age 3-5, generally before your child starts loosing their teeth and still has the essence of childhood in their little face. Mom, get ready.

I love the beauty of a sketch and this gorgeous bust of my Grandmother was passed down to me with a special caption handwritten at the bottom "Cecile Longley, my daughter a drawing."

I just love this so much because I see the artist has signed it, so I know the text handwritten below was probably added by my great grandmother, who I never had the pleasure of meeting. I love that she probably had this piece commissioned of my Grandmother, who is much older than a child so I often wonder if there was a certain occasion this piece was created to celebrate. A graduation perhaps?

I also have some paper cut silhouettes that my mom had created for me when I was very young, and I did these for the kids as well when they were younger. They're so sweet and classic.

I'd love to see some of your sketches, painting + family photos from your own family #HEIRLOOMED

The Kids Table.

If you know me, you know that I'm a big believer in sitting down together at the table as a family to enjoy a meal. One of my favorite things about our home is the kids table.

We have a little table that is perfectly sized for our three little kiddos to all sit together and eat. The main breakfast table in our kitchen is perfect for family supper, but it's table + bench style so my littlest guy (how is he almost TWO?) is almost old enough to sit there on a daily basis and eat without us having to worry that he'll fall off the back side. Thus, the kids table lives on.

We have worked to make the kitchen, pantry and kids table super kid-friendly so our little guys can be independent and help right alongside us at meal time. We have little cups stacked in the pantry and a little step stool so they can grab a snack if they're hungry, and keep stacks of dishes accessible for them too to help set the table.

One of my favorite things to collect is vintage enamelware because I love how simple and utilitarian the designs are, and because they are so sturdy and tend to hold up really well over the years. For this reason I also just love using enamelware for everyday dishes for our family. Unlike a heavy porcelain plate or bowl, if one of us happens to drop a dish it's much safer and easier to clean up and we don't end up having to throw away a broken dish.

My friends at Falcon Enamelware, an iconic brand out of England, send over some of their gorgeous pieces for us to enjoy in the pigeon grey color. Now, I haven't met a piece of enamelware I didn't like, but this grey has completely won me over. Above all else, beautiful and functional dishes for your family means you don't have to use a bunch of mismatched plastic "kids wear" dishes or paper plates. Setting a meaningful table for the kids too certainly helps them to understand the importance of mealtime.

My little helpers love to set their table and I know it makes mealtime feel so much more special when we are all gathered around together. Giving them real table linens can also help set a proper tone too, without being to stuffy or formal.

The kids are always charged with saying our mealtime blessing before we eat and I love the simplicity of their prayers. It formally marks the beginning of the meal and they've inspired a really special new collection that I'll be sharing with you soon.

We've also been dining al fresco out on the patio recently with this gorgeous summer weather and that's one place we can all comfortably sit around the table together. It's certainly a different dynamic and a really casual atmosphere, and we usually have the music on the porch speakers.

Family Game Night.

Among the toys and tablets that we often get caught up in, we try our very best to take a step back when it comes to showing our kiddos the magic of childhood.

It's the simple traditions and the most spur-of-the-moment experiences that I remember loving most from growing up. Playing in the yard with friends and swimming until the sun went down. Impromptu cookouts after a ball game and a game of checkers at an inn that had no TV or internet access. Riding my bike up to the Sing store for a cherry icee and a roadside bake sale stand. This is what I want for their childhood.

One thing we love to do together as a family, now that our kids are a bit older, is have an old-school family game night. Their favorite right now is Sorry. It's colorful, simple and pretty basic - and gives them the benefit of some pretty great fundamental skills no matter their age. We have color recognition for Waylon (almost 2), counting for Sawyer (3) and downright strategy for Wyatt (5) who has been known to pull a ringer on us from time to time.

A little dose of friendly competition is hard for our kids with the ages they are right now, but certainly a good life lesson. And spending time with them all together, gathered around a table learning, laughing and making memories beats just about any other Friday night activity I can imagine.

Any tradition we can create together is a score in my book. And of course it reminds me of all the games we played growing up, especially with my Grandmother who just loved to play a game of cards with us, like Rummy, and the little tile game of Rummikub too.

And, of course I absolutely love that so many of the games have come out with "vintage" versions that just look so great. But scoring an original vintage find from a flea market or antique store is always the way to go if you happen upon one.

For a young family, I thought it might be fun to share a few of our other simple game night favorites - and would love to know what some of your favorites are as well!
