Vintage Glass Stamped Cookies.

I am always looking for fun things to do with my kids during the holiday season. I picked up these beautiful vintage glasses from a thrift shop the other day and the design inspired this vintage-inspired baking activity.

You know I stay inspired not by looking ahead at the trends but instead by looking back to the past. Back in my grandparents era they were resourceful as the day was long. There was no Amazon to order a cookie press on a whim (let alone have it delivered two hours later …) so they looked to common household goods for inspiration and delight. Makers, companies and designers kept this in mind too which makes the story all the better. These little starburst-sided, flower-bottomed cut drinking glasses were meant to be both beautiful and functional.

A few little tips before you get started on this little DIY baking project yourself.

Before you create your dough you'll need to find the perfect glass for inspiration. Bring the kids along and turn it into a fun family outing, letting everyone pick out their own pretty glass. Thrift stores, Goodwill or antique malls are the perfect place to go as they usually have a million discarded glasses looking for a new home and most can be found at a great price point.

Search for glasses that have a pattern on the sides of the glass as well as on the bottom. This will give you multiple options for your cookie stamp. I found these beautiful patterned glasses at my local thrift store.

To create your cookie dough, use your favorite family recipe or this one!


SUGAR COOKIES:

  • 2 3/4 cups of flour

  • 1 tsp baking soda

  • 1/2 tsp baking powder

  • 1 cup of softened butter

  • 1 1/2 cups of white sugar

  • 1 egg

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

INTRUCTIONS:

Begin by preheating your oven to 375 degrees F. Then, using a small bowl, combine flour, baking soda and baking powder. In another bowl combine butter and sugar until the mixture is smooth. After all your ingredients are mixed, gradually beat in vanilla and egg. Next, Combine with the other mixture. Finally you will want to stamp your cookies with the glasses you have chosen. Once you have stamped your cookies cook for 8-10 minutes. Let them cool before serving.

Once your cookie dough is mixed, begin rolling it flat using a rolling pin. Then, use the top of your glass to even cut circles into the cookie dough.

Once you have your circles cut out flip the glass bottom down. Gently press down to leave your pattern on the cookie. A little tip, coat your hands and glass in flour so that it does not stick to the cookie dough.

Place your cookies on a baking sheet, bake following direction, and enjoy!

12 Days of Christmas Cookies : Classic Peanut Butter Cookies

On the 10th Day of Christmas Cookies I'm bringing you something that even Santa can't deny is just about as classic-cookie as they come. Peanut Butter cookies are such a favorite in our house, for so many reasons.

Of course, we all love the taste. I tend to be more a fan of creamy peanut butter but mixing it up with crunchy from time to time is always a nice surprise. I also substitute coconut oil for the shortening, which also adds a really rich flavor that I love. Peanut Butter cookies are so quick + easy so they're perfect when you need to whip up something quick.
 

But most of all I love them because my three little helpers love making them with me. I arm them with a fork of their own and they artfully press the little criss=cross pattern into the top of each cookie. Hope you'll whip up a batch of your own.

CLASSIC PEANUT BUTTER COOKIES

  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1/2 cup peanut butter
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 1/4 cups flour
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 3/4 tsp soda
  • 1/4 tsp salt

Mix shortening, peanut butter, egg and sugars together well. Then, mix all dry ingredients and add into shortening mixture. Heat your oven to 375 degrees. Roll dough into 1 1/4 inch balls. Place them 3 inches apart on lightly greased baking sheet. Flatten each ball in a criss-cross style with a floured fork. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes and enjoy!
